On today's show I have on Justin Orkney, the Commercial Director at Standard Power. Standard Power provides Infrastructure as a Service to advanced data processing companies such as those focusing on blockchain mining and high performance computing applications. They work closely with their clients to provide server management and colocation services with reliable, secure and efficient infrastructure at a low power price. Justin comes to the conversation with over a decade of experience in the energy industry where he worked on several important studies that helped highlight and identify strengths and weaknesses of renewable energy.

During today’s show, we have a wide-ranging conversation about a number of topics pertaining to the effects of renewable energy on a utility companies grid system. We also dive into why bitcoin is a no-brainer as a solution to helping balance out renewable energy generation; we also talk through the study that Justin helped start at Duke Energy, who by the way is the second largest energy producer in the US, and how that study is looking very closely at the properties of bitcoin mining as a demand response tool for grid operators; We talk through who Standard Power is and wrap up the conversation with Justin sharing his thoughts on how to address skepticism about having bitcoin mining customers on the electrical grid. This conversation seriously educated me on just how fragile the electrical grid is and how challenging it is to effectively manage things like rooftop solar.

Today’s podcast is brought to you by our sponsor, the Texas Blockchain Council; a bitcoin-first nonprofit industry organization working to make Texas the jurisdiction of choice for bitcoin mining and blockchain innovation.
